Flashback 2009 Samhain

SAMHAIN 2009

An example of a Samhain altar.

This is Hecate’s holiday, a celebration of the Crone and the powers of the dark feminine principle. This is the Celtic day of the dead, and a power day in the wheeled calendar. The Celts traditionally wore white to welcome the first day of winter and the increasing darkness. By now the garden should be cleared; tools cleaned, oiled, and out away. The house gets its own cleaning, windows polished to a sparkle, freshly laundered curtains re-hung. Scour the front step to remove bad luck and rinse with sage tea to protect all who dwell within. Toss the old broom and use a new one to sweep away misfortune. The ash from old fires should be removed from the hearth and the stones scrubbed; lay a new fire to light the way for the ancestors.

The descent into darkness from which all new life and ideas come is a potent time for prophecy and omens. Astrological Samhain (November 7) has powerful Crone Moon that lends veracity to her predictions just at dawn. Give honor to the Triple Goddess with offerings of roasted apple and hot cider. Bob for apples to commemorate the trip by water to Avalon. The magical power hour for the gibbous Halloween Moon is ten or so.

You’re Ginger Rogers today. And everyone and everything you meet is Fred Astaire. During this Libra Moontime think “grace in space.” If you meet an obstacle or encounter resistance, dance like you expected it to be there. Libra’s skill is knowing just how to receive whatever shows up. The trick is recognizing its beauty, which is all there is to diplomacy and charm. Any “couple tension” on this Moon is especially instructive. With as much neutrality as you can muster, examine the feedback loop of offering and receiving. If your lower back hurts, you might be doing too much or expecting too much from others. Court the idea that all the support you need lies within, as in a yoga balancing posture. This Moon asks, “Can you keep the peace and your balance at the same time?” The atmosphere is light and neutral today. It’s okay to be indecisive. Enjoy the ability to dance (gracefully) around the possibilities.

Flashback 2002 Ostara Celebration

images (3)

Just One Type of Altar Idea

Ostara

“Ostara or SPring Equinox brings a waxing Sun. The forces of night are held at bay for the
moment, and indeed will contiune to give way to the power of the Sun. The Sun enters
Mercury on MArch 20, the day of Mercury, and in the hour of the MOon, and begins its
circumnavigation of the zodiac. The Moon is skipping ahead of the Sun at 14 degrees
Gemini, and Mercury energy dominates this day. Only easlily completed projects should be
started. Althought the Sun and Moon are fire and air this is the ferility festival and it is
symbolized by the egg.

Celebrate at sunrise, using pink, pale green, lavendar, and butter yellow at the four corners
of your altar. Decorate the altar with an egg tree, or search out a pysanki egg with
approperiate symbols and nestle it in a bird’s nest. FOllow with a breakfast brunch; serve
eggs!

Creat ritual incense for fire and air symbolism. Blend rue, fennel seed, red sandalwood, and
cinnamon; add an equal amount of frankincense and several drops of rose oil. Cover and
store for two weeks before using.”

Moon in Aries

Dec 27, 2014 to Dec 30, 2014

The weatherman may say rain, but expect some Sun to shoot through the clouds. Aries Moon draws fire into the atmosphere, stimulating life force and vitality. You’re alive, filled with your own thoughts, centered into the vision before your own two eyes. It’s all about you today. Trouble is, everyone else is in the same place. Imagine a playing field with plenty of loose cannons. That’s Aries Moon. Insensitive remarks can land at missile speed and detonate into conflicts. The good news is they’ll end just as quickly. This Moon goes against teamwork, but it’s auspicious for personal challenges. Compete against your own limits. What’s that mountain you’ve been wanting to climb? Be daring. Headaches, eyestrain or sinus difficulty imply troubling feelings have collected inside your head. Meet whatever you’ve been avoiding head-on.
