Let’s Talk Witch – The Art of Scrying

THE ART OF SCRYING

(L.< scruatari = to look at) is a form of divination which uses crystals, crystal balls, water, fire or other shiny objects of fascination as the focus.

Essentially, the person doing the scrying focuses attention on the tool being used and freeing the mind, allows thoughts, ideas, pictures as a television screen. The size of the picture depended upon the size of the object and like the TV, it had to be tuned in to get the best picture.

Learning to scry can be frightening to the uninitiated. It takes a certain amount of control as well as submission, to get results. What is meant is that when focusing on the tool, you must have your mind free of extraneous things, things that pull your attention away. You must also allow yourself to be open to impressions, and not be distracted with the clouds or vapors that form in the periphery of your vision. Trying to control the situation can interfere with the results, the control should be done before the scrying begins.

There are various tools that can be used. They are as follows:

1- The crystal ball. This is the most popular tool for scrying. The ball can be glass, crystal or plastic. The most common are balls formed from optical quality glass that are ground round and polished to be absolutely clear. The most expensive are those that are ground and polished quartz, amber or other clear material. The third and the least expensive are cast out of acrylic plastic. The plastic one scratches more easily and takes more care, but works non-the-less.

2- The scrying stone. This is a polished crystal that is usually worn around the neck. It is not necessary that the shape be a sphere. Since the shape is less important, a lot of individuality can be shown. The size, shape, color and personal preference produce a large variety of possibilities.

3- The Magic Mirror. This is a sheep of glass that is painted black on the back side. The most common magic mirror is a large clock face that is painted black on the convex side. Scrying is done by using the concave side.

4- The scrying cup. This is an ordinary tea cup that has the inside painted black. For scrying, water is poured into the cup and the person doing the scrying looks into the water.

5- Sometimes an ordinary bowl is used. Water is poured into the bowl and black ink is added to make a black opaque surface.

6- Fire. Some people are drawn into fire, such as a campfire. The red glow of the coals seem to move and dance and play out a fiery scene. The flame of a single candle works really well and can be used for exercise in scrying. More on this later.

February 5 – Fortuna & Saint Agatha’s Day

Celtic Comments & Graphics

February 5 – Fortuna & Saint Agatha’s Day

Fortuna & Saint Agatha’s Day

St. Agatha was a Christianized aspect of the Greek Goddess Tyche, known to the Romans as Fortuna and to the Anglo-Saxons as Wyrd. It was the custom to set this day aside for the reading of omens and divining the future, especially by those desiring marriage.

Magickal Activity

Crystal-Gazing

Items Needed:

A bowl of water

One small clear-quartz crystal

One white candle

Place the crystal in the bottom of the glass bowl and cover it with water. Place the candle just behind the bowl and light it. With your right index finger, slowly stir the water around the crystal as you chant:

Blessed spirits of the night

Bless me now with second sight.

Gaze into the bowl. The water will begin to cloud over and a psychic mist will appear. When the mist begins to flow out of the bowl, stop stirring the water and look directly into the bowl. Focus your attention on the crystal and repeat the following:

Fire and water, crystal clear

Let the visions now appear.

Visions of the future will begin to appear. When the visions begin to fade, make a mental note of what you saw. Snuff out the candle and place the crystal under your pillow. The crystal will provide you with more information during your dream time. Later, write your visions down in your diary or dream journal.

The Witches Magick for Jan. 30th – Purification of Your Ritual Tools

Purification of Your Ritual Tools

Purification and dedication of your Wiccan ritual tools should be done as soon as you can after you get them.

Certainly purify them at least, before using or wearing the object!

Items that have a heavy or dark or hot energy need purification. This is particularly true of crystals. When clear, they will feel cool, tingly, bright, or positive.

A purified object is much more powerful than a contaminated one, and its magick is less likely to go awry.

Purification, dedication, and consecration of ritual objects take place in sacred space – that is, within Ritual. So begin by casting a Circle.

WITCH TIP: Before going further, check that the item won’t be harmed first . . .

Water – Crystals and other stones may be damaged by hot water. Always use cool water. Some crystals may be damaged even by cool water.

Sunlight – Gem stones, crystals, and other items may also be damaged – faded, melted, or broken by the heat.

Salt – Opals, metal, leather, and fabric can be damaged by salt, either dry or in water.

Smudging or Flame – Stones may be damaged by heat. Other items, like cloth and plant material, may be flammable – use extreme care.

Moon Bath

The simplest way to purify Wiccan tools is to bathe them in Moonlight. This will not only cleanse them, but recharge them as well.

Except for the very lightest cleansing, you’ll probably need to leave them at least one full cycle of the Moon. Full to Full, or Dark to Dark . . . whichever feels right to you. For lighter Moon-washes, use the Waning Moonlight.

If your altar is in the Moonlight, this is the best place to leave your ritual tools for a Moon bath. Otherwise, hanging them in a tree is good. (If it’s sparkly and you have lots of crows, ravens, or magpies around though, they might make off with it when you’re not looking!)

________________________________________

Herb Bath

You can bury your Wiccan tools in herbs for cleansing. Particularly effective are rose petals, sage, and mint. This is a lovely way to clean sacred objects, but it can take a while.

__________________________________________

Salt Bath

A faster method is a sea salt bath. You can bury your Wiccan tools in dry sea salt, or a salt-water bath.

Washing it in the Ocean, or even running wild water like a river, is even better.

If it feels like it needs a very deep cleansing, you can leave it in the salt water for a period of time – even in the Moonlight, for an even stronger affect.

___________________________________________

Earth Cleansing

You can bury certain items in Earth for purification – like stones and crystals. This will do a very deep cleansing.

Simply bury them, pointing downward, into Earth outdoors, between the roots of a tree is ideal. If you can’t manage that, bury them with a potted plant.

The real trick to this method of purification is remembering exactly where you buried your ritual tools! Be sure to leave a marker that is unlikely to be removed.

____________________________________________

Smoke/Smudge Sticks

Even more rapid is smudging, particularly using cedar or sage. Pass the ritual tools through the smoke a few times. This is enough for most purposes. But you can do as much as you need.

This is a great method for healing tools, especially stones.

The Cauldron of Kerridwen Potion

The Cauldron of Kerridwen Potion

Wolf Moon

Containing the magickal potion of inspiration, the Cauldron of Kerridwen was kept at either Caer  Sidhe or the Corona Borealis. Three drop of this magick potion would confer wisdom on any who had the courage to drink it. In mythology, nine maidens guarded  the brew, making it a task worthy of Hercules or Zena to procure the potion. Thankfully, you don’t have to go to that extreme because you can make your  own using the following instructions.

For this spell, you will need a clear quartz crystal and a chalice filled with spring  water.

Begin by clearing and programming your clear quartz crystal. Place the crystal in your power hand,  while at the same time placing the middle finger and thumb of your other hand on the bottom and top of the crystal. In your mind’s eye imagine a clear  mountain stream running through the crystal, washing it clean of all energy. Use the Vogel Pulsed-Breath technique to charge the crystal, only this time  imprint the image of the clear mountain stream instead of the moon into the stone. Pulse your breath into the crystal filling the stone with the image in in  your mind. Repeat the process three times for best results.

Repeat the process, only this time imagine all the creative things you want to put into the crystal.  Bring them all together into one image and then use your breath to pulse the image into the crystal. Do this three times to make sure the crystal is  thoroughly programmed.

Place the crystal in the cup of spring water, and leave it there overnight. In the morning, place  the potion in an enclosed jar, and use sparingly, three drops at a time, for filling yourself and everyone around you with creative energy.
