Calendar of the Moon for May 9th

Calendar of the Moon

9 Huath/Thargelion

Thargelia Day III: Eireisione

Color: Green
Element: Earth
Altar: Upon a green cloth set a cut branch of some food-giving tree, such as olive or apple. Each member of the community should bring some small thing to tie to it, for it shall be a charm to hang over the door for good luck. Its name is Eireisione. Also set out a cup of wine, a cup of milk with honey in it, a wreath of flowers, and a small bowl of barley.
Offering: Good wishes for the House and its members.
Daily Meal: Vegan. Thargelos, which is a soup of barley, corn, and fruit, sacred to Apollo.

Eireisione Invocation

As we cast up our barley in little showers,
A little grace from the birds is ours.

(The officiant throws a handful of barley into the air.)

A holy heifer’s milk, white and fair to drink,
Bright honey drops from flowers, bee-distilled,
With draughts of water from a virgin fount
And from the ancient vine its mother wild
An unmixed draught this gladness and fair fruit
Of gleaming olive, ever-blooming
And woven flowers, children of Mother Earth.

(The milk and honey is poured out as a libation.)

Eireisione brings all good things,
Figs and fat cakes to eat,
Soft oil and honey sweet,
The brimming wine-cup deep
That she may eat and sleep.

(All approach the altar with their items. Traditional items are dried barley cookies, sacred wool from first-shorn sheep, small corked bottles of wine, figs and dates, and small bags of grain. Anything will do, however. Each ties their offering on and speaks its meaning. The wreath of flowers is ceremonially added last by the officiant, and then Eireisione is carried in procession to the front of the House, where she is hung over the door with great ceremony. She is taken down on Puanepsia and burned in the fire.)

Daily Feng Shui Tip for April 19 – ‘National Garlic Day’

This ‘National Garlic Day’ could conceivably keep the vampires away as it’s a whole day dedicated to the ‘stinking rose.’ In ancient times garlic was given to people suffering from insanity, as it was believed to bring healing to that condition. Roman soldiers ate garlic to stimulate courage in battle. In magically delicious lore, garlic is used in protective diets to keep you safe from things that go bump in the night, even if it’s your spouse making a midnight snack of that last garlicky piece of lasagna. Use garlic daily to improve health and increase stability and security.

Four Thieves Vinegar

Four Thieves Vinegar

Four Thieves Vinegar is one of the tastiest salad dressings you’ll ever experience. It also has a wide-ranging reputation for healing and practical magic. For healing, it is used as a preventative tonic against all sorts of diseases, although its reputation was gained as a preventative against the bubonic plague in the Middle Ages. It is also used as a wound dressing in the old style treatment of gangrene, being applied to the wound after the maggotts have eaten off the dead flesh. It is not recommended for healing anymore, as there are more conventional ways of treating these illnesses.

To make the original Four Thieves Vinegar, peel a number of cloves of garlic. Place the garlic in a clean glass bottle. When the bottle is full of peeled garlic cloves, wine vinegar is poured over the garlic until the bottle is full. The bottle can then be capped and placed in the refrigerator, root cellar, or spring house for a week or so. The vinegar should be used a little at a time, with new wine vinegar being added as some is drawn out. It will last a year or so before a new batch needs to be made.

Purists use a red Bordeaux wine, and wait for it to tum to vinegar before using it. With modem pasteurized wines this may take some time, so wine vinegar is a faster starting place. Apple cider vinegar is not the “real thing” but it works just as well in magic and better for some healing work

Where the feet of thousands tread.

Great Lady of the Wilderness
Protector of the Wild Things
Inspirer of music in lonely places
And in the deep metro’ons,
Lioness who hunts your prey,
Guard the beleaguered lands of untouched Nature
Where few feet tread
Save for the children of Earth whose steps belong there.
Magna Mater,
You who understand both worlds,
Do not let us forget
That both are valued in your eyes
That both hold promise and treasure
And that we must learn to live in both
If we are to survive.

Refresh the Whole House With Lemon

Clean the drains. For this task, you’ll need lemons. To determine how many, just count the drains in your home—be sure to include the toilets and the dishwasher—and divide by two. Cut each lemon in half, squeeze the juice of one portion down each drain and flush well with hot water. This will take care of any nasties living in your pipes.

By those who raised us,
Yet we could not bring ourselves
Fully grown to the table
Until we had endured
The hardening flame.
Be kind to us, Lady!
As we go through life
Let us not be scorched
Or spared the fire
But bring us gently through
To be our final selves.

Chant: Baker of the Loaf of Earth
We endure your fire

(One of the loaves is broken and handed around and shared, some more are set aside to eat later, and then the rest are taken to some deserving place and donated.)
