Altar: Upon a cloth of purple place a vase of the budded hawthorn twigs, a knife, incense of gardenia and marjoram, and a figure of the Goddess.
Offerings: Contemplate something that is both beautiful and painful.
Daily Meal: Serve fruit juice with the food.

Call: Now is the time of the flower’s blossoming.
Response: Now is the time when the hand reaches forth to pluck.
Call: Now is the time when we struggle with our instincts…
Response: To take beauty for ourselves, or to leave it in its place.
Call: Now is the time when we must remember that all plants are not ours.
Response: We did not plant the forest, and it does not belong to us.
Call: We were not the first beings on this earth.
Response: We have come young and late, and the trees look down upon us.
Call: They groan from the centuries of our meddling.
Response: They grow thorns to protect themselves.
Call: Now is the time when the hawthorn goddess steps forward.
Response: Now is the time when the heartless lady lifts her hand.
Call: Now is the time of great beauty in the world.
Response: Now is the time when Nature protects her beauty.

Response: She sets the boundaries that no man may cross.
Call: She makes our hearts beat faster or slower.
Response: Her berries are sweet, but she protects them.
Call: We must respect her as we respect the Earth….
Response: The Green Man falls before her, heedless and headless.
Call: She is the blade of all trees, and we shed our blood for her.
Response: She is the teeth of Nature, and we give way before her might.

Colors: White and blue
Element: Air
Altar: Upon cloth of white and blue set twelve white candles, one sky-blue candle, a great jug of mead, and a cup of tea. Throughout the next nine days, the altar stays the same, and one more candle is lit. On this day, light the blue candle and three white candles.
Offering: Endeavor to mediate and make peace between warring factions. Do things correctly.
Daily Meal: Soup or stew. Bread with cheese, meat, or jam.

Invocation to Frigga’s Handmaidens

Call: Twelve maidens hold the halls of Asgard!
Response: Twelve virgins hold the pillars of heaven!
Call: Twelve mysteries hold the luck of Asgard!
Response: Twelve virtues hold the Law of heaven!
Call: Twelve words of power resound through Asgard!
Response: Twelve stars light up the dome of heaven!

Invocation to Lofn

Hail, Maiden of Peacemaking!
Hail, bringer of frith into our halls!
You who stand always between
The parties of war and conflict,

Be with us in our daily lives,
That we may learn to quiet our passions
And seek harmony in all things.
For peacemaking is more than merely stepping aside,
It is placing the needs of others above your own
And in so doing, making of yourself an offering for that peace.

Weave your heart into all you offer

(A libation of mead is poured out for Lofn, and the jug replaced for the next day’s ritual. A follow-up to yesterday’s House meeting should be held, with an emphasis on peacemaking.)

Element: Air
Altar: Upon a brown cloth light a single white candle, an empty horn, dust, and the rune Raido.
Offering: Make a commitment to seek something.
Daily Meal: Simple, like a road meal.

Walpurgisnacht Invocation I

Long, long ago, Odhinn the All-Father,
The Lord of Asgard and Keeper of Valhalla,
Stepped down from his great throne
Came down from his heavenly place,
Stripped off his divine raiment,
Laid down his sword and weapons,
And spoke unto those around him,
“There is more than this to life.
There is more than this day and night,
More than this wealth and might,
More than this poverty and hardship,
And I will find it.
I will seek wisdom wherever it might be,
Even in the deepest and darkest places,
Even if it comes hard to me,
Even if it kills me in the end,
I will not count this quest as wasted,
For a great Wyrd calls me out of my life,
And I must give up everything that I have
To gain everything I ever wanted.”
And saying this, he put on a ragged cloak
And walked away into the wilderness,
And all the entreaties of his loved ones

Hypatia’s Day: Pagan Martyrdom

Color: Red
Element: Fire
Altar: On a red cloth set a blade, a glass of wine, incense, the Book of Hours laid open, and a burning torch.
Offerings: Educate – gently – for your faith, whatever that may be. Do it without hubris.
Daily Meal: There is fasting tonight in honor of Hypatia’s sacrifice, until dawn. Those who cannot fast for physical reasons shall eat cold raw food and fruit juice.

Invocation to Hypatia

This torch burns for Hypatia.
Scholar, teacher, priestess,
Bright mind that brought forth
Fine words of inspiration,
Beloved by her students
And hated by those who would
Darken our world to ignorance.
Slashed to death with the sharp edge
Of seashells, her blood poured
Upon the page of knowledge
That she had defended.
Do not forget her, children
Of those who came after her
Into a world of blindness.
Honor her with your vision,
Your intelligence, and your love of truth.

Chant:
Your spirit burns bright
Like the sacred flame
We will never forget
The meaning of your name

Offerings: Votive candles. Quicken a newborn idea into birth.

Daily Meal: Hot drinks with every meal. Keep food warm.

Call: Now is the quickening of the year.

Response: Now is the time of the first movement.
Call: Now the child stirs in the womb.
Response: Now the seed stirs in the earth.
Call: Now the plains flood and our fire is threatened.
Response: Now the cold water drowns our spark.
Call: Now is the time of the hard struggle.
Response: Now is the month of desperation.
Call: Now is the time of desperation to live.
Response: Now is the time of desperation to be born.
Call: We turn in our sleep as the earth turns.
Response: We dream with the sleeping earth.
Call: Each of our dreams is a lit candle in the dark.
Response: Each of our dreams is a single point of hope.
Call: They shine faint and alone in the night of struggle.

Color: Green
Element: Earth
Altar: Upon a cloth of green set agricultural tools, and perhaps a small model farm of paper.
Offering: Give aid to a farmer.
Daily Meal: Food from a small local organic farm.

Paganalia Invocation to Gaea

The mother of us all,
The oldest of all,
Hard, splendid as rock
Whatever there is that is of the land
It is she who nourishes it
It is the Earth that I sing.
(All cry out: “Hail Gaea, Mother beneath our feet!”)
Hear now the words of Gaea:
Without me
No seed grows
No milk flows
No honey in the hive
Without my touch
No sweet exchange of breath between plant and animal
No safe nest from which to try your fledgling span
No one to miss you when you go
Without the part of you that is me
No working the earth
No food in the belly
No caring hand to help another.
(All cry out: “Hail Gaea, Mother who gives us all!”)

Lenaia Day IV

Colors: Purple and green
Element: Water
Altar: A large post is set up behind the altar, draped in robes of purple and green, with a mask of Dionysus upon it, and arms raised upwards made of grapevine and fruit tree branches. The altar is draped in purple and green, and upon it set two purple candles, a wreath of grapevines, two jugs of wine (one white and one red), and a chalice. All enter in a procession, with a torchbearer in the lead; the torch is placed in a holder before the altar.
Offerings: Dancing. Drumming. Music. Transforming dreams into reality.
Daily Meal: Wine. Goat or lamb. Lentils. Grape leaves. Greek food if possible.

Lenaia Invocation I

Hail, son of Semele! Iakkhos, Giver of Wealth!
We have danced for fertility of the Earth
And the fruits of trees.
We have danced for the fertility of Mind
And the fruits of Creativity.
We have danced for fertility of Soul
And the fruits of Creation.
Now we will be your Maenads
And dance in honor of your rebirth.
Invoke the God!

Response: Hail Iakkhos!

(Repeat three times. Then the drum circle is formed and the dance goes on in an all-night vigil. The duty of the vigil can be shared and danced in shifts, but there must be at least one drummer and one dancer present at all times until dawn. Any appropriate chant may be used. At dawn, the red wine is passed around and shared, with the worker saying, “Behold the blood of Iakkhos.” The remainder is poured out as a libation. Then the white wine is passed around and shared, with the worker saying, “Behold the dreams of Iakkhos.” The remainder is poured out as a libation.)
