Preparation to Make Before Your Ritual, Preparing Your Area & Your Body

Preparation to Make Before Your Ritual

Preparing the area:

Preparation of the area includes cleansing and consecrating the area in which you are working and setting up the tools in and around the altar space. Make sure that the quarter candles are arranged around the outside of the circle with the correct color in the correct direction: yellow for east, red for south, blue for west, green for north. All of the tools that are needed for the ritual should be placed on the altar and the illumination candles and the charcoal for the incense should be lit.

Preparing the body:

Before any ritual you should take a cleansing bath or shower. Baths are best as you can bathe in oils and bath salts that correspond to your working. On the correspondences page and within the recipes page, you can find different oils and salts that you may want to use for specific spells and rituals. Clean all parts of your body. Work at relaxing and cleansing your mind as you do this. Unless you are a practiced witch, you should remove all jewelry and anything else from your body that is not natural. You should not wear anything in your hair or any makeup. If you choose to wear clothes, you should wear a light cotton, silk or wool robe. The robe must be loose and must be of natural materials only. It is better, however, to work skyclad, or naked as clothing impedes the flow of magic and energy.

Let’s Talk Witch – Spiritual Baths

SPIRITUAL BATHS

Spiritual or ritual bathing is a good way to cleanse not only your body, but your spiritual body as well. Ritual bathing is recommended whenever you expect to encounter negativity, fight fatigue, depression, anxiety, and fear of any kind. It can also be done following a negative experience to fortify your spirit.

Ritual bathing is done with any number of washes and bath salts made with special herbs and colors specific to the purpose at hand. There are a couple of things that are important to do when preparing a ritual bath. Some of these are necessary; others are optional. Guidelines for ritual bathing are as follows:

1. Always bless the water before getting into the tub. Invoke the loas, goddesses and orishas of the healing waters in a manner that is meaningful to you.

2. As you get into the tub, soak yourself from head to toe while naming your problems.

3. Spend at least 15 minutes soaking in the healing water for a ritual bath. You may meditate, visualize a resolution of your problem, sing, or sit in silence. Do whatever feels comforting to you.

4. As you let the water go down the drain, visualize your problems washing away. With the last drop of water say “Let it be so”.

5. Always clean your tub with saltwater afterwards. Sea salt is best, though regular salt will also do. Also, be sure to clean any objects used in the tub with saltwater.

As part of preparing your ritual bath, you may light your favorite incense and light a candle to make the experience especially comforting and enjoyable.

Always take a soap bath prior to a ritual bath. Never use soap, oils, or anything else. Never stay in a ritual bath longer than 30 minutes and allow your body to air dry to achieve the full effect.

How to use the oils

How to use the oils

Think of the Whole Person

MASSAGE

This is the most effective method of using the oils, combining their properties
with the therapeutic power of touch. The skin absorbs the oil over a large
surface area and because there are many small blood vessels, (capillaries),
close to the surface of the skin, the oils, diluted to 5% in a carrier oil, are
carried into the blood stream and then to the relevant parts of the body quickly and effectively.

The oils should not be used undiluted, but should be diluted with an odorless
carrier oil, (see section on carrier/base oils), such as grapeseed, sweet almond
or peach kernel. A dilution of 3% essential oil to carrier oil is a recommended
starting point. (Less if using on sensitive skin such as babies). This is
approximately one drop essential oil to two milliliters of carrier oil. (6 drops
in two teaspoonfuls). But in all cases less can be definitely more!

BATHS

Using oils in baths is a simple, effective and pleasant way to relax and receive
the therapeutic effects. – Water itself has therapeutic value which enhances the powers of the oils. To use, add 6 to 10 drops of essential oil, (or a blend), to the surface of the water which has already been run, add no other substances, e.g. foam or bath oil, then immerse yourself for about 20 minutes. The heat of the water aids absorption through the skin, whilst you inhale the vapor. (Again reduce the amount of oils used in baths for babies).

Take care with plastic baths as some oils may cause staining.

COMPRESSES

Add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil to 100ml of warm water then soak a piece of
clean cotton in the water, wring out the excess and place the cloth on the
affected part.

INHALATIONS

Add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil into a bowl of steaming water, then place a
towel over your head and the bowl and inhale the vapor for a few minutes.

VAPORIZATION

All essential oils are antiseptic and evaporate easily, so they make very good
air-fresheners. Different oils create different atmospheres, so experiment! For example, relaxing Sandalwood or Clary Sage are good for parties; or Peppermint clears your mind when you need to work. There are many vaporizers on the market, from the simple bowl of water on the radiator with a few drops of oil on the surface, to vaporizer light bulb rings and specially made vaporizer bowls which sit above candle holders. There is even the “Aromastone”TM which is an effective electric vaporizer dispensing fragrance from a low heat source, thereby making the water and the oils last longer than usual.

The best way of dispersing essential oils is to use a diffuser or the
Aromastream TM, as most other forms of vaporizer drive off the most volatile
“high notes” first, leaving the slowly evaporating “base notes” to linger.

I personally believe that vaporizing rings on light bulbs should be used
cautiously, though I have not heard off anyone having a fire through using one.

PERFUMES

Make your own distinctive “Natural” perfume by blending different oils. (Many commercial perfumes use synthetic concoctions for their scent.) Try
experimenting with different combinations, which can be mixed with a carrier oil or non-fragrant alcohol.

Water Magick – Magickal Baths

Magickal Baths

Most Witches partake in magickal bathing. A magickal bath is considered important for cleansing the spirit, the same way regular bathing is for cleansing the body. Magickal baths work best by candlelight, with herbal, oil, and/or salt additions, corresponding to the need. You can also use magickal bathing to allow the water to work on you and impart some of its wisdom to you, through your immersion in it. In this manner, a magickal bath can be used for spell casting.

MIND HEART SPIRIT HEALING RITUAL

To quiet a troubled mind, mend a broken heart, or heal a wounded spirit, you will
need the following items:
1 DOVE FEATHER (preferably one that crosses your path by chance, but definitely
one which has NOT been plucked, but has fallen naturally.)
2 BLUE CANDLES (for healing, tranquillity, peace and forgiveness)
LAVENDER BATH SALTS OR OIL (for love, peace, happiness, purification and protection)
1 CINNAMON STICK (OR CHIPS) (for spirituality, success, healing, power, love and protection)
ALTAR BELL
On the night of a NEW moon, gather the items and place them on your altar
(or, if you have the privacy, outside on a tree stump or other earth area).
Take one blue candle and the lavender bath salts or oil and bathe in the lavender
by the light of the blue candle, concentrating on that which requires healing.(If you
cease bathing before the candle is completely burned out, do NOT extinguish the
flame by blowing it out, but do extinguish it.) Once at your altar (or earth place), light
the blue candle and recite the following:
It is time to awaken to the cry of the dove,
Hearken to the chimes of the bells of love,
Spirit rise and soul take flight,
Into the halls of endless night
Where shadows ceases to fall upon
The brilliant light of endless dawn.
The fire, cold, burns radiant
Consuming all in sweet content.
The joy a pain, the peace a wound,
The pain a peace, the joy a boon.
Next, light the cinnamon stick or chips (the stick works best) with the candle flame.
Pass the dove feather through the flame (quickly, so as not to set it afire) then the
cinnamon smoke, in that order, three times. While still holding the feather, ring your
altar bell three times. Leave the cinnamon burning in your censure ’til it goes out on
its own, and leave the candle burning ’til it does the same. Take the feather outside
and place it under a tree (elder, preferably, but any will do) — place it under a different
tree if you are performing this spell near a tree outside. This will set it free, freeing you
as well. DO NOT touch the feather again, let it leave on its own!

SACHET FOR HEALING

2 parts Cinnamon 2 parts Sandalwood 1 part Rose petals
1 part Cayenne 1 part Ginger 1 part Rue
Mix and tie in a blue or purple cloth. Anoint with Eucalyptus oil and wear or place near bed at night.
Some herbs that are medicinally good for pain relief and magically good for healing that
you might add into the sachet would be Chamomile, White Willow bark, and Wood Betony.

PAIN RELEIVER SALVE

Mix together 1 oz of chickweed (reduces inflammation and aids in healing), 1 oz of
wormwood (a great pain reliever), and 1 ounce of yarrow (an anti-bacterial agent that
also helps relieve pain). The yarrow plant contains achillein and achilleic acid.
These substances reduce the clotting time of blood, so they help stop any bleeding.
Yarrow also has pain-killing and anti-inflammatory properties that are similar to aspirin.
Add the mixture of herbs to 2 pints of olive oil and simmer 3 hours.
Strain and add 3 ounces of beeswax and 1 teaspoon of tincture of benzoin.
Test for consistency before pouring into wide mouth containers.
